Suicide is currently:

• The 10th leading cause of death
• The 4th leading cause of death for women between 45-55
• The leading cause of death for those under 24 years old.

Treating Suicidal Ideation

There are two evidence-based interventions for acute suicidal ideation:

• SAINT Protocol or BrainsWay’s Theta Burst
• Esketamine (Spravato)

Even hospitalization, when possible given the significantly limited number of beds available, does not reduce the risk after discharge. In fact, one of the highest risks for suicide completion is being discharged from a psychiatric hospital in the past month.
